She is often associated with the genres of soul, R&B, and pop. Riperton gained prominence in the late 1960s and 1970s, initially as a member of the group The Gems before joining the well-known psychedelic soul band Rotary Connection. Her most notable work is the 1975 hit "Lovin' You," which showcases her signature vocal style and became a classic, reaching No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.
